Abstract:

I study a market where strategic media outlets seek to maintain a consumer's attention by offering time-sensitive information. Among multiple foresighted media outlets, "cooperative rivalry" remains a robust phenomenon in equilibrium. Specifically, each media outlet’s equilibrium information policy relies on the correlation between their respective states which represent the fundamental uncertainty. It is typical for the media outlets to choose a low arrival rate of informative signal, especially in an intermediate phase of the game, as a form of tacit cooperation; meanwhile, genuine competitive behavior could only occur early, if ever. For the consumer, the value of receiving information is non-monotone over time.
