Abstract:Due to historical reasons, people in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan (HMT) have different senses of identity from people in the mainland China. This paper exploits the exogenous roommate assignment to examine whether inter-group interaction affects the sense of national identity of HMT students. The results suggest that living with mainland Chinese students significantly bolsters the sense of national identity with mainland China among HMT students. We provide supporting evidence that this enhancement of national identity comes from more interactions with mainland Chinese students and more usage of mainland video media. Our further analysis also finds that living with mainland students increases the willingness of HMT students to work in the mainland of China after graduation.
