Recently, the collaborative paper titled Measurement of Manufacturing Agglomeration and Export Agglomeration in China by Yu Miaojie, Fellow of the International Economic Association, Deputy Party Secretary and President of Liaoning University, and Gu Yuan, a doctoral student at the School of International Economics and Political Studies of Liaoning University, has been officially published in International Economics and Trade Exploration.
Abstract:
As a key spatial configuration of manufacturing industries, industrial agglomeration holds strategic value for optimizing resource allocation and promoting the synergy between domestic and international economic circulations within the new development paradigm. This paper systematically reviews the methodological evolution across four generations of industrial agglomeration measurement indicators, thoroughly compares their strengths, weaknesses, and directions for improvement, and employs index methods to measure the agglomeration degree of China's manufacturing industry and its export agglomeration. It further analyzes the impact of industrial agglomeration on economic performance and the determining role of innovation in shaping agglomeration patterns. The findings reveal that: (1) China's manufacturing agglomeration exhibits a gradient distribution pattern, generally decreasing from coastal to inland regions, with particularly significant agglomeration effects in metropolitan areas; (2) Industrial agglomeration exerts a notable positive driving force on economic growth, although the intensity of this effect varies across regions; (3) Innovation serves as the core driver reshaping industrial agglomeration patterns.
