Recently, the collaborative paper Measurement of Agglomeration Degree of China's Manufacturing Industry and Export Agglomeration Degree: Based on the New Development Pattern by Professor Yu Miaojie, Fellow of the International Economic Association (IEA) and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Liaoning University, and Gu Yuan, a doctoral student from the School of International Economics and Politics of Liaoning University, has been officially accepted by International Economics and Trade Research.

Abstract

As a crucial form of spatial layout in the manufacturing industry, industrial agglomeration holds strategic value in optimizing factor allocation and promoting the linkage between domestic and international dual circulations under the new development pattern. This paper systematically sorts out the evolution of four generations of methodologies for measuring industrial agglomeration, conducts an in-depth comparison of their advantages, disadvantages, and improvement directions, and uses index methods to measure the agglomeration degree of China's manufacturing industry and export agglomeration degree respectively. Furthermore, it analyzes the impact of industrial agglomeration on economic performance and the decisive role of innovation in the agglomeration pattern. The study finds that: (1) The overall agglomeration degree of China's manufacturing industry presents a gradient distribution characteristic of decreasing from coastal areas to inland areas, and the industrial agglomeration effect in urban agglomeration areas is particularly significant; (2) Industrial agglomeration has an obvious positive driving effect on economic growth, but the intensity of this effect varies among regions; (3) Innovation is the core driving force for reshaping the industrial agglomeration pattern.
