摘要：This paper investigates how the rise of startup acquisitions affects aggregate economic outcomes. I develop a tractable Schumpeterian growth model in which incumbents can acquire entrants to preempt creative destruction. In the model, firms with greater market power rely more on acquiring external innovations than on developing internal innovations. The acquisition premium also directs entrepreneurs toward building for acquisition, thereby reinforcing incumbent power. I estimate this model using US data on public firms and venture backed start-ups and find this channel is quantitatively important in explaining macroeconomic performance in the last four decades.
